Julian with Baked RollsConsidering employment training in Pastry Arts? Sunflower offers skilled, on-the-job training in a production pastry kitchen as a great way to learn marketable and transferable skills needed to secure employment in a pastry arts or bakery setting. Learn and work alongside our talented pastry chefs in Sunflower’s new, state of the art production bakery. The 26-week Sunflower training program includes a paid internship, direct assistance with finding a job and three months of on-the-job monitoring to ensure employment success. New classes begin several times a year.

Application & Interview Process

If you want to apply contact us for a site visit. We want to meet you and show you our kitchen.

  1. Please check out our “Is Sunflower for Me?” information
  2.  Contact us at programs@sunflowerbakery.org to schedule a site visit to the Bakery.
  3. After the site visit, we will provide an application for completion.
  4. Upon receipt of your completed application, we will review your application and contact you for an interview which includes a 45-minute kitchen interview. Expect to spend 1.5 hours for this interview.
  5. If the interview is successful, a 3-4 day hands-on assessment in the Training Kitchen with our pastry chef will be scheduled.
  6. Upon completion of the kitchen assessment, all of the information will be reviewed. Applicants will be contacted by our Director of Student Services regarding acceptance.

Eligibility

Angela Piping French Macaron FillingBeyond your interest and having a documented or undocumented learning difference or other barrier to employment, eligibility requirements include:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old and mature enough to seriously prepare for a career in baking.
  • Applicants must present documentation of permission to work in the United States as specified by the Department of Homeland Security I-9 form at the interview.
  • Applicants must have a designated “support” person/agency (a teacher, service provider, social worker or family member) available to provide support throughout training, internship, and employment.

Tuition & Financial Assistance

  • Michael MixingAbility to pay is NOT a barrier to enrollment. We welcome all applications to our programs. Sunflower Bakery works with all accepted candidates to ensure their ability to enroll in the Pastry Arts Program.
  • The cost of Sunflower programs may be offset through either participation of the student’s service provider, MD Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), DC Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA), private pay, or Sunflower scholarship. Sunflower scholarships are provided based on demonstrated need. The published tuition for the Pastry Arts Employment Training Program is $10,124 but inability to pay this amount is NOT a barrier to acceptance.
  • A non-refundable $50 application fee and $450 assessment fee can be reduced or waived based on demonstrated need.
  • During the last 8 weeks of the program, students have an internship at Sunflower where they are paid minimum wage for working approximately 20 hours/week.
  • Eligibility for funding through a service provider, DORS, RSA, or another agency is discussed during the interview. DORS & RSA may provide funding for tuition if you are approved by them to receive employment training at Sunflower Bakery. Please contact your DORS representative to find out if you are eligible.
